The Ford Explorer is a mid-sized sport utility vehicle produced by Ford Motor Company. It was first introduced in 1990 in North America. It was released as a replacement to the Ford Bronco SUV. It slots between the Ford’s smaller Escape and the larger Expedition SUVs.

During first generation, it was available in both four door and two door sport versions. All the models were offered in 4-wheel drive. Explorer was also meant to the package offered by Ford during 1968 to 1986.

First Generation (1991-1994)

The first Ford Explorer model hit the market in the model year 1990 as 1991 vehicle. Only engine available to the model was 4.0 liter V6 version that delivers power up to 155 hp and this can be mated to either 4-speed automatic transmission or to 5-speed manual transmission.

The first generation Ford Explorer model was offered in either four wheel drive or in rear wheel drive. Four trim levels were offered for 1991, the base model XL, XLT, sport and up-level Eddie Bauer Edition. The standard features in the up-level model include center roof console, auto dimming rear view camera, fog lamps, automatic headlights, special grille and special wheels.

Despite all its high power and various trim versions there are certain problems reported with the first generation Ford Explorer, mainly with the automatic transmission.

Second Generation (1995-2001)

The Ford Explorer in the model year 1995 saw significant suspension, interior and exterior updates. The independent suspension replaced the previous Twin traction beam front suspension.

Ford Explorer in this generation was also offered in both two-door sport and 4-door models. The standard engine to the model was a 5.0 liter V8 version that delivers 210 hp of power and torque of 200 lb ft. All the models were offered in full time all wheel drive system. The 1995 Ford Explorer was the first model to feature neon center high mount stop lamp and it was replaced by conventional lamp in 1998.

As far as the exterior dimensions of the Ford Explorer model were concerned, it had the wheel base of 111.5 inches, length of 190.7 inches, width of 70.2 inches and height of 67.0 inches. The Explorer released in this generation was related to Mercury Mountaineer.

Third Generation (2002-2005)

The four-door Ford Explorer model was totally redesigned in 2002 and it was similar to the Ford Expedition variant.

Fourth Generation (2006-Present)

Along with the companion model, Mercury Mountaineer, the Ford Explorer was also completely redesigned for 2006. New features are offered. The standard engine to the model was a 4.0 liter V6 version that delivers power up to 292 hp and it comes mated to 6-speed automatic transmission.
